Via Veneto’s Historyn

In the IMPERIAL ROME, the families used to have luxury villas and gardens in a suburb called Via Veneto. It is possible to see the ruins of this area in the excavations of the Piazza Sallustio, which name descends from the largest garden of Via Veneto, the Horti Sallustiani. After the plundering of Rome in the 5th century, the suburb was turned into a country area, recovering its brightness only in the 17th century, when the Palazzo Barberini and the Villa Ludovisi – nowadays disappeared – were built.

When Rome became the capital of Italy, in 1870, the Ludovisi sold their lands, keeping just a piece to build a new house. However, the taxes above the profits of the selling were so expensive that they decided to sell the whole property. In 1900, the Via Veneto was a street with small hotels and cafes. It has a spot light page in La Dolce Vita (1960), movie of Fellini, a pungent satire to the life of cinema stars and idle riches.

My gratitude to Mr. Juarez Henrique Campos (Oriundi Restaurant, Vitória/ES). Together with all his crew, he supported me on making this dream come true.
